We were able to sleep in a little later this morning, but since we’ve been living by daylight so 7AM is “sleeping in” for us. We didn’t really have anything planned for the day except for taking a boat out on Lake McDonald, so it was a great day for rest and relaxation. Every once in a while (especially after camping for 8 days straight), a day like this is much needed.
We drove to nearby Apgar Village to watch the sunrise and eat breakfast at Eddy’s Café. I drank my coffee on Lake McDonald while watching the sun rise above the Glacial mountains with my best friend…life couldn’t get any better than this!
Eddy’s was not only a restaurant, but also a convenience store and an ice cream shop (homemade, family-owned, since 1946!). What made our breakfast unique were the huckleberries. Apparently, huckleberries are a BIG deal here in Montana. Along with our classic breakfast meal, we ordered a homemade huckleberry lemonade and a side of fresh huckleberries. The fruit alone was a bit too sour for me (Joey loved them!), but boy was that lemonade gooood!
We went back to our campsite to relax and wait for the sun to come out and warm up the day a bit more (mornings up here can be below 40, but midday can reach above 90!). Joey set up our hammock, and he immediately fell asleep, while I wrote yesterday’s post.
Finally, the sun came out and we were ready for the boat! We went back into Apgar Village where the boat rentals are. They rent out many different things like kayaks, canoes, motorboats, and paddle boards…we chose a motorboat to explore Lake McDonald!
It was a beautiful day for a boat day, and we enjoyed a couple of Moose Drools (Montana brewed, award-winning brown ale) with stunning mountain views that almost looked like a fake backdrop that they used for our elementary school photos…it was too good to be true!
We were wiped out after the boat, especially with the sun beaming down on us. We had an early dinner, showered, and decided to go to Apgar Village one last time for some homemade ice cream. Joey had the Huckleberry Harvest and I had the Moose Track…YUMMY!
When we got back to camp, we went to bed early because we had a long drive ahead of us towards Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington. We’re staying at the park for two nights, but in two different campgrounds…each representing unique flora and fauna of the park, so stay posted!
