We woke up pretty late this morning, especially after our 11-hour drive yesterday! By the time we woke up it was already time for lunch and we knew we needed to do a BBQ place while in Austin, so we headed to Mickletthwait Craft Meats! By the time we got there (around 12:30PM), they were already out of some of their meats (we missed the pulled pork!). We ordered a thickly-sliced brisket sandwich with a side of jalapeño cheddar grits, and it was just what we wanted!
After lunch, we drove around South Congress and saw a lot of awesome street art, which we always love seeing! It’s been really awesome to see the different styles of street art in the cities that we’ve visited throughout this trip!
My friend Woody told us about Hope Outdoor Gallery, which is similar to Cadillac Ranch, where visitors are welcome to spray paint the walls of this public, but privately-owned, space. It’s incredibly active, so the canvas is constantly changing!
I guess the brisket sandwich wasn’t enough for us, because we were craving tacos, and our friends highly recommended Torchys Tacos, and Austin must! There are many Torchys around the city, but we chose to go to the Trailer Park & Eatery location (which had a more local feel to it!).
The tacos were so delicious, but we may have overdone it by ordering 3 tacos (they were huge!). We had a little bit of time to kill before dinner and wanted to stay out of the hot weather, so Joey searched nearby breweries, and found one that was open, 4th Tap Brewery Co-op.
The beers were good, but I think we were both pretty full from all the food we ate and we wanted to leave a little bit of room for dinner! After a flight of beers, we made our way to Alcomar where we’re meeting my grad school classmate, Elia, for dinner! Joey and I shared a calamari plate, because we probably wouldn’t have been able to finish a meal of our own..haha! It’s been a few months since our semester has ended, so it was great to be able to catch up with Elia during dinner!
After dinner, we headed to the Austin 360 Amphitheater where we saw Matisyahu, Dirty Heads, Sublime with Rome, and 311! It was an awesome outdoor venue, and thankfully the night brought in cooler weather (at least cooler than the 105-degree weather we had earlier today!). The concert was a lot of fun and it was awesome to be able to catch them on tour during our cross-country roadtrip and experience a different venue and fans!
After the concert, we headed to Elia’s house where we’re staying for the night! We were so tired when we got back, so we went right to bed! We have another big drive towards New Orleans, where we’re staying tomorrow! It’s our last city before we make our way back home to Florida, and we’re excited to explore the city with so much legendary history AND nightlife…so stay posted!!
