After a long day of being a tourist and walking all over the National Mall, Joey and I had a later start to our morning than usual. After we woke up, we went into Arlington Cemetery to catch the next changing of the guards ceremony, which occurs every single hour. Walking through the fields of gravestones was beyond serene. There seemed to be endless fields of headstones marking our nation’s fallen.
We arrived at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with only 5 minutes to spare before the ceremony, so we sat as quietly as possible, but obviously made sure to get some great pics.
After the ceremony, we continued to walk around the grounds. We sought out the Kennedys’ memorial gravesite, which also boasted breathtaking views of the surrounding area and the Washington Memorial across the Potomac River.
It began to rain as soon as we got to our car, so we decided to head back and get some lunch. We searched for food nearby, but because of the holiday many places were closed. While driving on the main road, we found Earl’s Sandwiches (not the chain in NYC and elsewhere…), where we had some delicious specialty sandwiches, which made us very happy campers!
After lunch, we headed into Georgetown to explore the beautiful little town. We were craving ice cream on this rainy day, so we went to Thomas Sweet. YUM!
I wish we had better luck with the weather, because it would have been nice to walk around the town for a bit longer, but we made the most of it. Let’s be real, I had one purpose for coming to Georgetown, and that was obviously to get some Georgetown cupcakes!
Tonight is our last night in DC, and we have already seen so much in just two days! We’re heading to the tippy top of the Washington Memorial tomorrow morning before we leave the city, so hopefully we will have more great pictures for you guys tomorrow!
